Are you getting ready to teach your child how to ride a bike this spring? The question at hand is: training wheels or balance bike??? I love talking to parents who are getting ready to teach their child this milestone activity and oftentimes I ask, training wheels or balance bike?
Many parents have not heard of balance bikes or how this simplifies the learning. This simple bike without any pedals looks funny to parents who grew up with the security of training wheels flanking the rear wheel of their ‘big kid bike!’
Many parents agree that training wheels can provide a negative learning experience: we put them on, the child gets comfortable and then we take them away. Some children do fine, but for others, it is a negative learning experience and sometimes even traumatic.
Balance bikes, quite simply put, introduce the idea of balance before anything else. The concept is easy: children master balance first, build confidence and then they make the transition to the ‘big kid bike’ because all they need to learn is to pedal!
Parents who have used the balance bike with their little ones will proudly tell you how their kiddos took to the thing and learned to balance, go fast and discover this new found independence!
Texas M.I.L.K. a.k.a. as, Texas Moms I’d Like to Know, kicked off their inaugural music event at SxSW in Austin, Texas on Sunday, March 18, 2012. The TX M.I.L.K. MOMS ROCK! Showcase was a free, family-friendly day of music featuring an amazing lineup of mom musicians including The Bluebonnets (featuring Kathy Valentine, formerly of the Go-Go’s), Shelley King, Elizabeth McQueen, Amy Atchley, Karen Chisholm, and teen indie (and mom-managed) band, Charlie Belle. The event also featured a variety of mom-owned and mom-focused business. It was an amazing day to celebrate music and motherhood! Joovy was delighted to donate an Orangie Groove and Orangie Nook to celebrate the day!
Spring is here! Are you opening doors and airing out? This blog post will hopefully give some pointers on how to approach spring cleaning, or cleaning any other time of the year with toddlers in tow.
Okay Mamas (and Dads) what do you do when you need to clean the house and you’ve got a very active baby or young toddler hanging around? Pulling out cleaning supplies is stressful when you’ve got a little guy who loves to grab the dust brush, jump into the tub and wander into your kitchen — even if you have gates and have childproofed everything possible! And don’t forget how toddlers “help” by pulling papers and toys onto the floor! Even if you are the master of childproofing, it’s hard to keep little ones safe when you’ve got to vacuum or mop…
So, what do you do?
We’ve come up with some tips to make it a little easier
1. Plan out what you are going to do first, second…and so forth.
2. Try to get as much done during nap time or after they’re sleeping at night (obviously this isn’t when you vacuum).
3. Have them “help” a little. If they can understand directions, they can help you pick up their own toys. Have large bins/baskets that they can easily put things into (and will help you organize their stuff).
4. In situations where you don’t want them helping, such as mopping or vacuuming, utilize your playard! Make sure there are soft toys inside and the sheet is clean and let him play! This way, your little one is safe, nearby, and you know they’re not getting into cleaning supplies or slipping on a freshly mopped floor.

The “minimum age” requirement on our front seats has changed from 6+ months to 3+ months. This new age grading applies to all of the strollers in the Joovy line with the exception of the Cocoons. The Cocoon and CocoonX2 remain at the 6+ months age grading.
This is important news as this allows for younger infants to sit in the front seats of our strollers on their own.
